Annual event presented by Oakley draws pro athletes and industry elite
PERRIS, CALIF. (July 23, 2009) – After a one-year hiatus, thetenthannual Surfercross is returning to Southern California. The two-day event is bigger and better than ever, and will take place on Tuesday, August 4 at Starwest MX Park (Perris, Calif.) and Wednesday, August 5 at San Onofre State Beach. “Toyota and Muscle Milk really stepped up to help put on the event this year,” said Jeremy Albrecht, co-creator of Surfercross. “And Oakley has been with us for a few years now and has always put in 100% effort. It’s hard to believe that Mike [Parsons] and I started this thing ten years ago and it keeps getting better and better.” The Pro class is invite-only, and this year’s roster includes professional AMA riders such as Josh Grant, Cody Cooper, Justin Brayton, Wil Hahn, Jake Moss, and Sean Borkenhagen, as well as former top riders Greg Albertyn, Eric Sorby and David Pingree. This year’s overall winners will receive one-of-a-kind engraved guitars, courtesy of Fender. The famed guitar company will be giving away a total 12 guitars at the event. The event is set up as a team competition, with each pro motocrosser and each pro surfer riding on day one and surfing on day two. Teams are decided based on the luck of the draw---a random drawing at the start of day one determines who teams up. After each day, the points are tallied and the team with the best combined score for both disciplines takes the overall win.Past winners include Brandon Rambo/Jeff “Ox” Kargola, David Pingree/Adam Wickwire, Josh Hansen/Scott Farnsworth, James Stewart/Mike Parsons, Rick Johnson/Sunny Garcia, Dave Castillo/CJ Hobgood and Nathan Ramsey/Bryan Hewitson. In addition to the Pro class, there are close to 50 spots open for people from both the moto and surf industries to compete for trophies and bragging rights. It’s a first-come, first-served format, and there’s always a long list of alternates hoping someone doesn’t show. Every year the event draws the interest of long-time sponsors as well as new ones. The Muscle Milk Training Center will be set up helping keep competitors fueled up and hydrated for their next moto or surf heat, and Oakley is bringing out a custom event truck to set up a distinctly Oakley pit area, complete with goggles for the riders. No Fear is supplying brand-new gear to all the pro surfers in need, and Wahoo’s provides a full lunch both days for participants and their crews. Kawasaki and Yamaha bring a range of KX and YZ motorcycles for surfers that don’t have them but still want to compete.
The Toyota/Muscle Milk Surfercross presented by Oakley is sponsored by FMF, Asterisk, No Fear, Wahoo's Fish Taco, N-Style, Kawasaki, Yamaha, Starwest Motocross Park and Fender. Created by Jeremy Albrecht and Mike Parsons, Surfercross has become an event that many pros look forward to each year – it’s a laid-back, no-pressure event that combines the overlapping interests of many surf and moto athletes.

2006 OAKLEY SURFERCROSS Event get bigger in its eighth year
SAN ONOFRE, CALIF. (August 28, 2006) – The eighth annual Surfercross once again took over Starwest MX Park and Trail 6 at San Onofre State Beach. Oakley returned for the second year as Surfercross’ title sponsor, and Boost Mobile stepped up to become the event’s presenting sponsor.
Every year the event draws the interest of long-time sponsors as well as new ones, and more and more competitors show up ready to take home a trophy or two. Oakley brought out two custom trucks and set up a distinctly Oakley pit area, complete with goggles for the riders. Fox Racing was not far away, supplying brand-new gear to all the pro surfers in need, and new sponsor CytoMax Sport Energy Drink setup a “hydration station” – free to all participants and their crews. Wahoo’s provided a full lunch both days, and Weekend Warrior even checked out the event for the first time, bringing two trailers out to use as a hospitality area in the center of the pits.
Moto industry icons Jeff Emig and Brian Deegan came out for a laid-back day of riding, and even though their partners crashed in the first moto, they still had fun. Surf icon Sunny Garcia was committed to the event as always – after crashing hard in the second moto, he was at San Onofre the next day ready to compete.
The two-day Surfercross wrapped up after a moto day on August 23 and a surf day on August 24. Despite 105-degree weather, Kai Patterson and Chris Barrett pulled off the overall moto win by going 1/1 at Starwest. Volcom’s Troy Powell and Rich Taylor came in second and Oakley’s Ronny Nelson and Cycle World magazine’s Ryan Dudek finished in third. The surf day was another story, as Mike Parsons and Joel Albrecht took top honors. Oakley-sponsored surfer Brandon Rambo and Boost Mobile-sponsored freestyle rider Jeff “Ox” Kargola came in second, with Volcom’s Troy Ekert and Asterisk’s Dave Castillo in third.
When is came time to hand out the trophies, Rambo and Ox emerged as the 2006 Surfercross overall champions with a 4(moto)/2(surf) total score. Second overall went to the team of Ekert/Castillo with a 5(moto)/3(surf), and Parsons/Albrecht scored third with a 9(moto)/1(surf).
In the Industry class, Cycle News magazine’s Don Burke and FMF’s Donnie Emler, Jr., took the overall win with a 2/5 score. Second overall went to the team of Randy Lawrence and Derric Swinford with a 1/16, and Cycle World’s Mark Cernicky and AJ Sjostrom came in third overall with a 4/14.

2005 OAKLEY SURFERCROSS
Seventh annual event draws competitors, fans and spectators
SAN ONOFRE, CALIF. (August 6, 2005)---Surfercross was back in Southern California again this past week, pairing some of the top names in the motocross and surf industries. With Oakley coming on as the title sponsor, this year's event was one of the best ever.
Winners got the customary trophies, but Oakley, Yamaha, G-Force Surfboards and On-A-Mission really stepped it up. Oakley gave away sunglasses and goggles and On-A-Mission gave away board bags, leashes and rash guards. Yamaha offered up a 2006 TTR-50 as the grand prize, but instead of it going to first place, the top-six finishing pro riders put their names in a pool and a winner was drawn at random. "Factory" Phil Lawrence was the envy of the crowd, taking home the brand-new mini-bike. Racer X magazine's David Pingree took home a certificate for a custom board shaped by G-Force surfboards.
Surfercross wrapped up after a moto day on August 4 and a surf day on August 5. In the Pro division, it was Phil Lawrence and O'Neill's Garth Tarlow taking the moto win on day one, with Honda factory rider Ernesto Fonseca and Oakley's Ronny Nelson in second. On the surf day, Adam Wickwire and David Pingree were in first, with Mike Parsons and Kawasaki's Dean Baker in second.
The surf win proved to be enough for the Wickwire/Pingree team, as they took home the overall and became the 2005 Surfercrosschamps.Parsons and Baker were in second, followed by Ryan Sakal and Cycle World magazine's Ryan Dudek in third.
In the Industry class, Yamaha's Terry Beal won his second consecutive overall, partnered this year with Ghetto House Glassing's Paul Berton. They took the moto win and placed second on surf day.Second overall went to Curt Biegal and John Haden, with Mike Bell and Motor Racing Outreach's Joel Murphy taking third overall.

2004 SURFERCROSS WRAPS UP
SAN ONOFRE, CALIF. (August 6, 2004) The sixth annual Surfercross finished up this week after two days of fierce but friendly competition. The Surfercross event, created by Jeremy Albrecht and Mike Parsons and presented by Fox Racing, takes top motocross racers and pairs them with top surfers for a day on the track and a day in the surf.
The event is set up as a team competition, with each pro motocrosser and each pro surfer riding on day one and surfing on day two. Teams are decided based on the luck of the draw, a random drawing at the start of day one determines who will be teamed up with whom. After each day, the points are tallied and the team with the best combined score for both disciplines takes home the overall win.
In the Pro division, it was Yamaha’s Josh Hansen and Oakley’s Scott Farnsworth who took the moto win on day one, with Cordell Miller and Kawasaki’s Michael Byrne close behind them in second. For the surf portion of the competition, Surfercross veterans Sunny Garcia and Joel Albrecht picked up the win with Chris Drummy and Trigger Gumm in second.
But in the end, the team of Hansen/Farnsworth put together the two days most consistently, taking home the overall and becoming the 2004 Surfercross champs. Adam Wickwire and Buddy Antunez were in second, followed by Troy Ekert and Ryan Dudek in third.
In the Industry class, the points were close as Mike Bell and Greg Lasiewski took the moto win and placed eighth on the surf day. But Terry Beal and Malcolm McCassey, who came in second on the moto day, closed the gap when they picked up sixth on the surf day, giving them the overall win in the Industry division. Bell/Lasiewski held on for second overall, with Meha Balmores and Rich Wait in third.
Surfercross, presented by Fox Racing and sponsored by Oakley, Boost Mobile, Asterisk, Wahoo’s Fish Taco, Kawasaki, Yamaha and N-Style, has become an event that many pros look forward to each year. Surfercross has evolved over the years yet continues to be a fun, no-pressure event that combines the overlapping interests of many surf and moto athletes. Past winners include: James Stewart/Mike Parsons, Rick Johnson/Sunny Garcia, Dave Castillo/CJ Hobgood and Nathan Ramsey/Bryan Hewitson.
